Hungarian institutional leadership changes
Overview
Several high-profile leaders in Hungary have announced their departures from regulatory and sporting organizations.
Zoltán Szujó, president of the Hungarian National Motorsport Association (MNASZ), announced he will not seek re-election in December. Szujó characterized his term as a “turbulent period” marked by efforts to increase transparency despite personal attacks and a lack of unity within the motorsport community. The MNASZ leadership has faced instability, with the seven-member presidency recently reduced to four members following several departures.
Separately, László Nagy resigned as president of the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities (SZTFH). Nagy stated he could no longer effectively perform his duties due to planned government structural changes. He noted that his attempts to establish contact with relevant ministerial leaders following the formation of Hungary’s new government “yielded no substantive results.”
The Hungarian government is reviewing whether to dissolve the SZTFH or transfer its responsibilities to other bodies. A decision published in the Magyar Közlöny mandates a review of the authority’s operations and regulatory environment to determine the feasibility of these changes. Under the current proposal, the SZTFH—which oversees sectors including tobacco, gambling, mining, oil, gas, geothermal energy, and judicial enforcement—is expected to lose its independent regulatory status and cease to exist as an independent body on January 1, 2027. Nagy will serve a 60-day notice period until mid-December.
