Hungarian political dispute over national anthem and events
Overview
Political tensions in Hungary have emerged following a controversial performance during the August 20 state holiday celebrations. The dispute centers on singer Ajsa Luna, who allegedly performed the Hungarian national anthem incorrectly by sitting down and holding a cigarette.
Mi Hazánk Mozgalom MP Előd Novák has filed inquiries regarding the financing of the event, questioning the Tisza government’s refusal to disclose compensation details and whether funds should be reclaimed. Novák also criticized police for not acting on complaints regarding the perceived desecration of the national anthem. In response, parliamentary state secretary Bence Csontos accused Novák of using his “usual inimitable style to incite against various minorities.”
The controversy has expanded into allegations of financial misconduct. The Fidesz party has accused the Tisza Party of conducting a fraudulent public procurement process for the August 20 celebrations. Fidesz claims the tender was rigged to favor Hardrock Kft., which they describe as the Tisza Party’s “in-house event organizer.”
According to reports, the previous organizer, Lounge Group, was unable to fulfill contracts after its accounts were frozen due to ongoing investigations, necessitating a new procurement process. Fidesz alleges that Hardrock Kft. received budget and subcontractor information weeks before the official tender was issued.
László Toroczkai, leader of Mi Hazánk Mozgalom, has announced that his party will file a report regarding suspected anti-competitive agreements within the 4 billion forint procurement process. Additionally, Fidesz MP Balázs Németh criticized the decision to proceed with the Budapest fireworks display despite high wind speeds, labeling the authorization as “irresponsible and dangerous.”
