Hungary-Serbia border infrastructure development

Overview

The Hungarian government has announced plans for the complete reconstruction of the Hercegszántó–Bački Breg (Béreg) road border crossing. The Ministry of Transport and Investment intends to launch a public procurement process for the project shortly.

According to Minister Dávid Vitézy, the upgraded crossing is designed to support continuous 24-hour operations and heavy freight traffic. The development will include dedicated lanes for buses and trucks, expanded capacity for passenger vehicles, a parking area for approximately 40–42 trucks, and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

This initiative aims to relieve congestion at the Röszke and Tompa crossings, where Röszke currently handles up to 40,000 vehicles daily. The project is expected to reduce pressure on the M5 and southern M0 motorways while improving connectivity between Southern Hungary and Vojvodina, facilitating easier access to the M6 motorway via the Mohács Bridge.
