Hunter Schafer gender-affirming surgery disclosure

Overview

Actress Hunter Schafer has publicly shared that she underwent gender-affirming bottom surgery in December 2025. In an interview with Elle magazine, she described the experience as ‘amazing’ and expressed high satisfaction with the results.

Schafer discussed her evolving relationship with her gender identity, stating, ‘I am a woman. I am a girl.’ She explained that the decision stemmed from a desire to align her physical self with her personal identity, noting a tension between theoretical queer philosophies and her lived daily experience.

She also detailed a rigorous recovery process that required significant physical restrictions. To facilitate healing, she rented a large apartment to receive support from friends and family while adhering to medical advice to limit her movement to approximately 150 steps per day.

In addition to discussing her personal journey, Schafer noted her upcoming role in the Prime Video miniseries ‘Blade Runner 2099’, starring alongside Michelle Yeoh and produced by Ridley Scott.
