Hurricane Polo intensifies to Category 5 off Mexico

Overview

Hurricane Polo has undergone explosive intensification, with sustained wind speeds reported between 285 and 290 km/h and maximum gusts reaching up to 350 km/h. Meteorologists attribute this rapid strengthening—which saw wind speeds nearly triple in less than 24 hours—to warm ocean waters associated with the El Niño phenomenon.

While the storm's center is forecast to remain offshore and not make direct landfall, its massive circulation continues to threaten the southwestern coast of Mexico. Significant risks remain for Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, Oaxaca, and Jalisco, where heavy rainfall may trigger flash floods and landslides, accompanied by high surf and dangerous ocean currents.

In response to the escalating threat, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has launched a preventive operation to protect the electrical supply, deploying 1,320 electricians, 331 cranes, 445 light vehicles, 82 emergency plants, and a helicopter.

Maritime and local authorities have expanded emergency protocols. The Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) has ordered the closure of various ports, including Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, and Manzanillo, and has deployed over 13,000 naval personnel under Plan Marina. In Jalisco, school activities have been suspended in 33 municipalities within the Sierra de Amula and Costa Sur regions. The Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) remains prepared to deploy emergency response forces. Additionally, the U.S. and UK governments have issued travel advisories for citizens in Mexico due to the storm's potential impact.
