ICE fatal shooting in Maine investigation

Overview

In July 2026, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian national, at an intersection in Biddeford, Maine. At the time of the incident, Guerrero held a federal work permit. Reports indicate the shooting occurred after an agent ordered Guerrero to stop his vehicle; Guerrero reportedly stated, “I tried to stop,” before being shot through the windshield in the presence of his wife and young daughter.

Following the incident, legal representatives for the family testified before Congress, alleging that the only justification provided for the death was that it was in the interest of public safety. Lawmakers used the forum to address concerns regarding abusive tactics by immigration officials. While Senator Susan Collins has called for ICE reforms, such as the mandatory use of body-worn cameras, reports noted that the agents involved were not wearing cameras during the encounter.

Three months after the shooting, no charges have been filed against the officer involved.
