IIO investigations into British Columbia police conduct
Overview
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia has concluded two separate investigations into police conduct involving injuries sustained during arrests.
In the first instance, the IIO cleared Sooke RCMP officers of causing ‘serious harm’ during a March arrest near Otter Point Park. The investigation followed an incident where a man was injured after refusing to leave a residence. After reviewing body-worn camera footage, medical records, and surveillance video, the IIO determined the injuries did not meet the threshold defined by the Police Act.
In a subsequent conclusion, the IIO cleared Victoria Police regarding a June 7 arrest at a liquor store on Wilson Street. Following a report of an injury sustained during the attempt to remove an individual from the premises, the IIO reviewed CCTV footage, radio transmissions, and medical records. The chief civilian director determined the injuries did not meet the ‘serious harm’ threshold, resulting in the closure of the investigation.
