Illegal land use and construction in Sorrento
Overview
Authorities in Sorrento have conducted several seizures of land and historical sites due to unauthorized use and construction violations.
In late September 2026, the Napoli Metropolitan Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Torre Annunziata seized a section of the ancient Spasiano Roman cisterns. Investigators found that two restaurants linked to the same company were using the protected, state-owned archaeological site as an unauthorized food storage facility, having constructed private access doors to the area.
In October 2026, Carabinieri executed a preventive seizure of an agricultural plot in the Pignatella area near Marina di Puolo. Originally an olive grove subject to environmental and landscape constraints, the land had been illegally converted into a permanent parking lot featuring ticket kiosks, canopies, and cement paving. The seizure followed findings that commercial activity had continued past the expiration of a temporary use agreement in October 2025.
