Illegal migrant housing investigations in Ceuta

Overview

Authorities in Ceuta are intensifying efforts to combat ‘pisos patera’, which are residential properties used to hide migrants to evade official control.

In late September, a 21-year-old man received a suspended one-year prison sentence for using a relative’s property to hide seven immigrants, including two minors, in exchange for over 3,000 euros.

Following this, officials opened seven separate investigations into illegal migrant housing in areas such as Loma Colmenar, Doctora Soraya, and Polígono Virgen de Africa. These proceedings, prompted by police investigations and citizen complaints, have already resulted in one arrest and judicial referral. Authorities noted that these illegal activities have generated over 10,000 euros in profit and that unauthorized renovations in these properties have created safety risks for local residents.
