Illegal migration and smuggling in Estonia
Overview
In mid-September, Estonian police in Tallinn detained three Bangladeshi nationals suspected of entering the country illegally near the Astangu forest. According to Northern Prefecture operational manager Urmet Tambre, the individuals reportedly traveled through Estonia from Belarus via Latvia, a movement pattern noted since mid-summer.
By early October, law enforcement operations expanded to target organized human smuggling. Following several vehicle interceptions between October 3 and October 6, police detained six suspects accused of transporting 19 foreign nationals. These incidents involved various nationalities, including individuals from Morocco, Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and third countries, discovered in vehicles across Tori Parish, Paldiski North Port, Häädemeeste, and the Tallinn-Tartu-Luhamaa highway. The prosecutor’s office is pursuing expedited proceedings against the suspects.
