Illegal waste disposal in Jakarta

Residents in Kapuk Muara, North Jakarta, reported the presence of illegal temporary waste disposal sites. These sites, containing household waste and industrial debris, have caused air pollution through odors and illegal burning, increased fire risks, and reduced land absorption, which heightens flooding risks.

Community members alleged that certain officials might be protecting waste-hauling trucks, noting that previous reports had not resulted in decisive action. In response, the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives urged the provincial government to investigate the legality of these activities.

Following these reports, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung ordered a crackdown on illegal disposal sites throughout the capital. He instructed various agencies, including the Environmental Agency and Satpol PP, to enforce regulations and publicly name those responsible for illegal dumping. The Governor identified that many of these sites are operated by private entities serving the hospitality sector, such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes. The administration intends to use public disclosure as a deterrent, supported by new waste sorting initiatives under Governor Regulation Number 5 of 2024.
