Illegal waste dumping in Greek municipalities
Overview
Municipalities in Greece have reported increasing instances of illegal waste dumping that threaten environmental and cultural sites.
In Tyrnavos, authorities launched a legal investigation after discovering a large-scale illegal landfill in the Roumani area of Platanulia. Following an inspection by police and municipal officials, a formal complaint was filed to identify those responsible for the waste. Local officials noted that illegal dumping has reached “alarming levels” across the municipality, posing risks to public health.
Similarly, the Municipality of Polygyros reported new dumping in the riparian area of the Olympia River, situated opposite the Olympia Archaeological Site. The waste included bulky items and hazardous empty pesticide containers in an area previously cleared by municipal services. Deputy Mayor Vasilis Fardogiannis described the recurring behavior as an “insult to the environment, cultural heritage, and law-abiding citizens,” noting the significant costs incurred by the municipality to restore the site.
