Impaired driving and traffic incidents in Europe

Overview

Recent reports from Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Austria continue to highlight a pattern of traffic accidents and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In Germany, incidents include a severe collision in Hamburg involving a taxi and a Porsche, as well as accidents involving e-scooters and cars. New reports detail a towing vehicle striking a bridge in Wörth am Rhein and further instances of impaired e-scooter riders in Erlangen and Brookmerland. Recent fatalities and serious accidents have been recorded in Fritzlar, where a woman lost her life, and in Ehra involving a 34-year-old driver. Impaired e-scooter riding has also been reported in Gera. In response to these trends, the Märkischen Kreis has launched ‘Project E’ to educate eighth-grade students on the dangers of e-scooters.

In Switzerland, the Canton of St. Gallen continues to report multiple accidents involving intoxicated or incapacitated drivers, resulting in several injuries and significant property damage.

In Austria, authorities reported a fatal accident in Fernitz-Mellach where an 82-year-old pedestrian was killed by a drunk driver who fled the scene. Other criminal activity noted in the region includes robberies and fraud attempts targeting seniors in Cologne and Duisburg, as well as the theft of a safe from an elderly care home in Eupen, Belgium.
