Increased rainfall levels in Catalonia

Overview

In October 2026, meteorological data from Meteocat indicated that approximately one-fourth of its automatic weather stations had already exceeded their annual average precipitation levels, despite several months remaining in the year. Significant increases were reported in Barcelona, where the Fabra Observatory recorded 734 liters—80% higher than the century’s average for that date—and in Granollers, which recorded 735 liters. Other regions, including Terres de l’Ebre and parts of Girona, also reported levels well above annual norms.

By mid-October, specific locations such as Terrassa officially surpassed their annual rainfall averages. Data from the Can Poal station showed 593.8 liters per square meter, driven largely by intense rainfall in September and early October. Experts noted the year has been defined by extreme irregularity, transitioning from a very rainy January through a prolonged spring and summer drought to the current period of intense autumn rainfall.
