Overview

Solar activity increased significantly on August 20, 2026, characterized by intense eruptions from sunspot groups. An M8-class solar flare was recorded as a “major event,” occurring during a period where scientists documented 19 eruptions within a single 24-hour window. This specific eruption featured a large plasma ejection that resulted in a phenomenon known as “coronal rain.”

Later that day, Active Region 4513 produced an M8.1 flare. This event was accompanied by a Type II radio sweep, indicating the production of a coronal mass ejection (CME). Because the region is located near the Sun’s east limb, the ejection is expected to head away from Earth.

While the impact on Earth is considered “neutral” regarding major threats, the activity is expected to cause R1-Minor to R2-Moderate radio blackouts over the Atlantic Ocean, Europe, and Africa. High electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is also projected to persist through August 22 due to a coronal hole high-speed stream.
