India college ragging complaints surge

In late July 2026 the Ministry of State for Education reported a sharp increase in ragging complaints across Indian higher‑education institutions, with 755 cases logged to 22 July and Uttar Pradesh accounting for the most. The data show a steady rise since 2022, prompting the University Grants Commission to issue show‑cause notices to 107 institutions and to expand anti‑ragging measures such as a 24‑hour helpline and mandatory undertakings.

In the first week of August, the focus shifted to individual violent incidents. A first‑year student in Mangaluru, Karnataka, suffered a serious neck fracture after senior students allegedly assaulted him, leading police to detain six seniors and file an FIR under anti‑ragging provisions. A separate case in Hyderabad, Telangana, involved a 17‑year‑old who received a nasal bone fracture after being punched by seniors, resulting in charges against the assailants and the college management. Karnataka’s cumulative complaint count reached 181 between 2022 and July 2026, the highest among South Indian states, underscoring the growing severity of the problem and the authorities’ ongoing investigations.
