India digital travel and immigration facilitation

Overview

India is implementing digital measures to facilitate international travel and streamline immigration processes.

In August 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs expanded the e-visa system by increasing the number of designated international entry points to 88. This expansion includes 37 airports, 38 seaports, and 13 land ports, including new additions such as the Bhopal and Tirupati airports.

Following this, the Bureau of Immigration announced that starting September 1, international travelers will be permitted to use e-boarding passes on smartphones for immigration clearance. This initiative aims to reduce traveler inconvenience by eliminating the need for physical stamps on boarding passes. Travelers in the Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Program (FTI-TTP) can also utilize these digital passes at e-gates. Under these updated procedures, passengers may use electronic boarding passes on mobile devices or printed copies to expedite the immigration process when departing from India.
