India expands e‑Zero FIR cyber‑fraud system

Overview

Following Assam’s launch of the e‑Zero FIR platform in late June 2026, several Indian states have adopted the automated system that converts online cyber‑financial crime complaints into First Information Reports without jurisdictional delays. Odisha integrated the tool on 8 July, linking it to the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) and the State Crime Records Bureau’s CCTNS, automating complaint conversion for losses of ₹10 lakh or more.

On 18 July, Tamil Nadu’s Crime Branch‑CID arrested a key suspect in a trans‑national cyber‑slavery and overseas‑employment fraud that trafficked Indian youths to Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos for fake Bitcoin investment scams. The same day the state introduced its own e‑Zero FIR system for complaints exceeding ₹1 lakh, providing instant SMS confirmation, three‑day authentication, and rapid transaction freezing under the BNSS 2023 framework.

Extending the rollout, Rajasthan Police activated an automatic e‑Zero FIR mechanism on 23 July, integrating the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (I4C), the 1930 helpline and CCTNS. Within 18 hours, seven FIRs were filed, bringing the state’s total to 460 since launch and highlighting faster account freezes and evidence preservation.

On 16 August, Gujarat Police launched its own ‘Cyber Financial Fraud e-Zero First Information Report’ system. Utilizing the 1930 helpline, the system aims to leverage the ‘golden hour’ following a fraud to increase fund recovery. In one instance, the mechanism helped a victim recover 1.63 crore rupees out of a 2.30 crore rupee loss.

Collectively, these state‑level deployments aim to curb the surge of cyber‑fraud reports—28.15 lakh complaints in 2025—by eliminating duplicate data entry, shortening registration times and enhancing transparency across India’s digital economy.
