India financial sector activity 2026

Overview

In late July 2026, India attracted a wave of new capital as both its own large fund managers and sovereign wealth funds from Abu Dhabi increased investments. The domestic manager focused on banks, utilities, pharmaceuticals and, cautiously, oil refiners, while Abu Dhabi’s funds poured roughly $1.7 billion into Indian banks, airports, renewable-energy projects, healthcare, digital platforms and manufacturing, more than double the amount invested a year earlier.

A week later, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) reported a rise in unclaimed mutual-fund dividends, with balances climbing 15.7% to Rs 2,689 crore for the fiscal year ending March 2026. SEBI highlighted new investor-protection measures, such as integration with DigiLocker and a one-time nominee death-reporting mechanism.

By August 2026, the mutual fund industry reached record highs. Total net inflows hit Rs 85.75 lakh crore in July, and retail investor participation surged in August with approximately 33 lakh new demat accounts opened.

Following the close of the 2025-26 financial year, SEBI data revealed that net systematic investment plan (SIP) inflows reached a record Rs 2 trillion. This net inflow accounted for approximately 56% of the Rs 3.5 trillion in gross SIP investments, marking the highest share in at least three years. While SIP account closures increased due to equity market volatility, total SIP outflows through redemptions—approximately Rs 1.5 trillion—showed a significant slowdown in growth compared to previous years. Industry officials noted that retail investors are increasingly adopting a long-term approach, maintaining commitments through market corrections.
