India Free Trade Agreement market access initiatives
Overview
United Nations Resident Coordinator in India, Stefan Priesner, stated that Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are essential for expanding market access for India’s economic ecosystem, specifically benefiting large-scale industries and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Priesner noted that transitioning to sustainable manufacturing could help India access international markets and emphasized that industrial expansion must promote inclusive, decent work for women.
Following these observations, state governments in Haryana and Telangana launched outreach programmes to help exporters and MSMEs utilize FTAs. In Haryana, workshops focused on helping the gem and jewellery sector leverage zero-duty access in partner countries such as the UAE, Australia, the UK, and the European Union. In Telangana, initiatives targeted expanding export potential in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, engineering, and food processing to support India’s goal of reaching USD 1 trillion in exports.
