India-Greece maritime and diplomatic cooperation
Overview
Diplomatic and maritime cooperation between India and Greece has intensified, focusing on seafarer welfare and maritime security. In late September 2026, officials from India and Greece met in Athens to discuss the rights, safety, and dignity of seafarers, as well as issues regarding abandoned vessels and crew changes. Proposals were made to establish Global Seafarers Centres in Greece to support maritime workers.
Building on these bilateral ties, the third edition of ‘Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue’ convened in New Delhi from October 7 to October 9, 2026. Co-hosted by the Observer Research Foundation and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the forum addressed the blue economy, maritime logistics, and geopolitical tensions affecting global trade.
Strategic cooperation has since expanded into deeper military and industrial realms. Following meetings between Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias, Singh met with General Dimitrios Choupis, Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, in Athens. These high-level discussions emphasized the necessity for regular exchanges between armed forces and increased defence industrial collaboration. Both nations expressed a commitment to expanding cooperation through prioritized policy planning, joint staff talks, capacity building, and joint exercises, while further strengthening their strategic partnership within the maritime domain.
