Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel conducted a three-day official visit to India in early September 2026. During meetings with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, the leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations through cooperation in trade, investment, supply chain resilience, and emerging technologies such as space, artificial intelligence, and green tech.

Jaishankar noted that the ratification of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement could open ‘new horizons’ for the partnership. Bettel’s itinerary also included visits to Chennai to tour the IIT Madras campus and inaugurate a new facility for the Luxembourg-based company SES.

In addition to bilateral economic discussions, Bettel commended India’s pragmatic diplomacy regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. He highlighted New Delhi’s ability to engage with both Moscow and Kyiv as a way to serve global interests, such as food security and Black Sea trade routes. Bettel also noted the importance of European involvement in future peace negotiations to mitigate economic and security disruptions.
