India military response to Pahalgam attack

Overview

Operation Sindoor was an 88-hour Indian military operation launched on May 7, 2025, in retaliation for a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which resulted in 26 deaths. According to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, the operation aimed to destroy terrorist infrastructure and camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The military exchange concluded on May 10, 2025, following discussions between the Directors General of Military Operations of both nations.

In August 2026, the Discovery Channel premiered a two-part docuseries titled ‘Declassified: Operation Sindoor’. While the series features commentary from Doval—who stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally directed the pursuit of those responsible—it has faced intense scrutiny regarding its accuracy.

Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) rejected the documentary, describing it as a ‘highly dramatised, coloured and factually inaccurate account’ that uses ‘Bollywood-style’ reconstructions to distort history. Referring to the confrontation as ‘Marka-i-Haq’, the ISPR accused the film of portraying a failed venture as a ‘100 per cent mission success’.

Disputes have intensified regarding aerial combat losses. While the documentary claims all Indian aircraft and pilots returned safely, reports from Reuters, the Washington Post, and AP suggest significant Indian aircraft losses. These reports, supported by US official assessments, indicate that Pakistani aircraft, including a J-10C, were involved in downing Indian fighters such as a Rafale and a MiG-29. India’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Anil Chauhan, has acknowledged initial aircraft losses, though he has disputed the total number reported by Pakistan.
