Overview

In late July 2026, opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu intensified their criticism of the government, focusing on agrarian distress and regional water rights. Udhayanidhi Stalin, speaking at a statue unveiling in Chennai, criticized a societal tendency to celebrate social media fame over grassroots activism, stating that “society celebrates those who post reels more than genuine field fighters.” Alongside farmer union chief Raghesh Thigayi and leaders of the Karappan Poochi (CJP) party, the opposition signaled plans for a united front of farmers, students, and youth to challenge the central government.

DMK leader M. K. Stalin accused the TVK-led state government of betraying farmers regarding loan waivers, the Mekedatu dam issue, and crop damage caused by Mettur dam management. He organized a large protest in Thanjavur for 3 August to demand Cauvery water protections and relief for delta farmers. This protest was timed to coincide with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s meeting with Karnataka officials in Bengaluru.
