India Police Commemoration Day observances
Overview
India observed its 67th Police Commemoration Day on October 21 to honor police personnel who died in the line of duty. The day traces its origins to 1959, following the deaths of ten policemen during a confrontation at Hot Springs in Ladakh.
At the National Police Memorial in New Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presided over a ceremony featuring a joint parade by the Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces. Intelligence Bureau Director Dr. Mahesh Dixit reported that 154 personnel died in the line of duty over the past year, bringing the total number of martyrs since Independence to 36,852. During the event, Shah also launched a motorcycle rally themed ‘Fight Against Drugs’ as part of a national campaign to eliminate narcotics by 2029.
In Jammu and Kashmir, ceremonies included wreath-laying services, parades, and two minutes of silence across districts such as Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama, and Kupwara. To support families of the fallen, district police chiefs read out rolls of honor, distributed gifts to next of kin, and organized interactive welfare sessions, alongside blood donation camps and sports tournaments.
In Delhi, the police organized a ‘Run for Martyrs’ from Nehru Park to the National Police Memorial. Additional commemorative activities scheduled through October 30 include police band displays and competitions for children. The National Police Memorial, where homage was paid, was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.
