Overview

India has signaled its readiness to assist in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. During a meeting in Kyiv, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s position that the ‘endless war must now give way to the end of war,’ citing the humanitarian and economic impacts on the Global South, including shortages of food, fuel, and fertilizer.

Following discussions between Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov stated that Moscow and New Delhi are ‘on the same page’ regarding the necessity of dialogue. While Alipov affirmed Russia’s preparedness for peace talks, he asserted that the ‘ball is in Ukraine’s court.’

In addition to diplomatic discussions, Russia reaffirmed its commitment to meeting India’s energy requirements, stating it is prepared to supply necessary oil levels. Alipov also criticized Western secondary sanctions as ‘pressure tactics’ while supporting India’s pursuit of an independent foreign policy.
