India skill development and digital training initiatives

Overview

India is implementing various government-led skill development and digital training initiatives to address industry demands. The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) has certified 11.1 million candidates across its first three versions, with 2.44 million placements achieved through short-term training. The program’s fourth phase has transitioned toward training in future-oriented technologies, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and cybersecurity.

Complementing these efforts, the FutureSkills PRIME portal, a collaboration between MeitY and NASSCOM, has reached over 34 lakh registrations. Of these, 13 lakh individuals have earned certifications. The initiative shows significant reach in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, which account for 86 per cent of candidates, and has successfully integrated training into academic curricula through partnerships with state governments and academic institutions.
