Overview

In late July 2026 India and Bhutan deepened their long‑standing development partnership. On 29 July, India disbursed a second tranche of Rs 237.83 crore and, together with Bhutan’s Ministry of Finance, signed a concessional line of credit worth Rs 4,000 crore to fund projects under Bhutan’s 13th Five‑Year Plan. The meeting also inaugurated two ecological parks in Thimphu, formalised a health‑education and research MoU between AIIMS and Bhutan’s medical university, and delivered 45 electric vehicles to support Bhutan’s green‑mobility push.

Two days later, during Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit, the two sides signed the same line of credit and the health‑education pact, and approved 12 new Project‑Tied Assistance projects valued at Rs 332 crore covering infrastructure, health, agriculture, urban amenities and disaster management. India reaffirmed its overall commitment of Rs 10,000 crore to Bhutan’s plan, highlighting continued financial and technical support. High‑level meetings with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay underscored mutual appreciation for the partnership.
