Indian hospitality and travel market trends

Overview

The Indian hospitality sector is experiencing significant growth and shifting consumer preferences. The hotel industry has seen a surge in wedding bookings ahead of the winter season, with major properties reporting double-digit growth. Roop Partap Choudhary, Executive Director of Noor Mahal Delhi NCR Karnal, reported a 15 per cent increase in wedding business compared to last year, noting that weddings can account for approximately 60 per cent of a property’s total business. Key dates in November and February are nearing full capacity, with bookings extending into 2027.

Broadly, the travel market is showing increased interest in alternative accommodations, such as villas, homestays, and apartments. This segment is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 21.2% through FY29, potentially reaching INR 415.1 billion, though supply is currently struggling to keep pace with demand. Travelers are increasingly prioritizing wellness, culture, and history, with 58% of Indian travelers planning to increase international travel in 2027. Additionally, 87% of Indian travelers express confidence in using AI for travel planning.

Looking toward long-term infrastructure needs, the hospitality sector is expected to require between 120 and 125 million square feet of organized space by 2035. This would translate to an addition of 190,000 to 210,000 hotel rooms, driven by rising incomes and shifts toward business, leisure, and spiritual tourism.
