Indian National Congress student outreach debate

Internal and external political tensions have emerged regarding the Indian National Congress party’s engagement with student issues and youth voters.

Initially, MP Shashi Tharoor prompted debate within the party by suggesting that Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatro Ki Goonj’ outreach program failed to achieve significant impact. Tharoor noted the need for the party to reflect on whether it is failing to connect with ‘Gen Z’ voters. This prompted a response from Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, who cautioned leaders against making public statements that might provide political advantages to the BJP.

Subsequently, Rahul Gandhi has intensified his focus on student-related issues and democratic rights, such as protesting alleged police actions against students at Jantar Mantar, as part of a strategy for upcoming assembly elections. This shift has drawn criticism from BJP MP Yogendra Chandolia, who accused the Congress party of politicizing student grievances for electoral gain. The Congress party continues to work on strengthening opposition alliances to challenge the NDA.
