Indian opposition allegations against Enforcement Directorat
Overview
Political leaders in India have accused the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of using its investigative powers for political targeting and intimidation.
In Punjab, Minister Aman Arora alleged that the agency is attempting to malign the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leadership through selective media leaks and vague allegations. Arora claimed the ED has failed to provide concrete evidence or usable electronic data to the Punjab Police and suggested the agency’s actions are intended to “create chaos, intimidate political leadership, and pressure government officials.”
Broadening these accusations, opposition leaders across other states have voiced similar concerns. In Kerala, former CPM leader TK Govindan characterized attempts to register an FIR against former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as a “politically motivated move” aimed at weakening the INDIA bloc. Meanwhile, in Karnataka, ministers MB Patil and UT Khader accused the central government of employing the ED and Income Tax Department to intimidate Congress leaders and coerce politicians into changing their political allegiances.
