Indian political dispute over voter list revisions

Overview

A political dispute has emerged in India regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists and allegations of ‘vote chori’ (vote theft) made by the Congress party and the INDIA bloc. Opposition MPs recently marched toward the Election Commission headquarters to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has countered these allegations by citing past statements from opposition figures. Rijiju used a previous speech by Kapil Sibal to explain the legal reasons for name removals from electoral rolls, such as relocation or death, to argue that current claims are unfounded.

Additionally, Rijiju challenged the opposition by sharing a 2015 video of Arvind Kejriwal, in which the AAP leader demanded large-scale corrections to voter lists. Rijiju argued that the current opposition to the SIR process contradicts Kejriwal’s previous demands for comprehensive electoral list reforms.
