Indian teacher eligibility examinations
Overview
The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) 2026, administered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), was postponed from its original September 6 date following a Supreme Court directive. The postponement aimed to ensure eligible teachers could meet legal qualification requirements and to resolve scheduling conflicts with the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) Bailiff-cum-Clerk exam.
Following the postponement, the application window for the CTET was extended through September 1, 2026. This extension, which ran from August 25 to September 1, was implemented to allow candidates who missed the initial window to meet statutory qualification requirements. Following the closure of this registration period, candidates are awaiting a revised examination schedule, admit cards, and city slips. An application correction window will also be provided via the official website to allow applicants to rectify personal or academic details to avoid disqualification.
Separately, the Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test (HTET) is expected to take place on November 21 and 22, 2026, for Level-1, Level-2, and Level-3 candidates. The Board of School Education Haryana (BSEH) may introduce changes to the OMR-based testing system, such as a fifth ‘NOTA’ option and the use of a second sheet as a carbon copy.
