India's Saptadhara development roadmap

Overview

During India's 80th Independence Day celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision to achieve developed nation status by 2047. In his address from the Red Fort, he highlighted India’s economic transition from the ‘Fragile Five’ to the world’s fastest-growing major economy, noting that defence production has increased fourfold and electronic manufacturing has grown sevenfold over the last 12 years.

Central to this vision is the ‘Saptadhara’ (Seven Strengths) reform agenda, which focuses on seven pillars: manufacturing, agriculture and food processing, technology and innovation, Gati Shakti (infrastructure), Raksha Shakti (defence), green and blue economies, and soft power. Modi emphasized transforming India into a global manufacturing hub by controlling the entire value chain from design to production. He also called for increased global corporate presence, setting a goal for 50 Indian firms to join the Fortune 500 within the next decade.

To support these objectives, the government is prioritizing youth empowerment through free online coaching for competitive exams and a target to provide AI skill training to 10 million youth. Social empowerment initiatives also include a new target for the Lakhpati Didi scheme to empower 6 crore rural women. Long-term ambitions include reaching 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 and hosting major international sporting events, such as the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics.
