India's West Asia security engagement

Entities: Amit Shah · Narendra Modi · S. Jaishankar · Ajit Doval · Nirmala Sitharaman

Overview

In late June 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Iran’s president to discuss peace initiatives and the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. By the end of July, Modi chaired a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting that brought together senior ministers to address the escalating West Asia conflict. The discussion focused on safeguarding India’s energy imports, fertilizer supplies, and the safety of Indian seafarers operating in the region. The government announced measures to maintain adequate LPG, LNG and petroleum stocks, diversify procurement, and temporarily waive customs duties on certain petro‑chemical feedstocks. It also ordered accelerated expansion of piped natural gas connections and confirmed sufficient fertilizer buffers for upcoming planting seasons. A new mechanism was set up to provide timely information, emergency assistance and counselling to Indian seafarers, alongside the Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool RELIEF scheme to support export‑related businesses. Additionally, India evacuated 2,557 nationals from Iran via Armenia and Azerbaijan, and reported that 16 Indian nationals, including 10 seafarers, had been killed in the conflict.
