Overview
In Michoacán, the state government has moved to formally recognize and engage with indigenous self-governance. On August 19, 2026, Mazahua communities were presented with the ‘Suprema Junta Nacional Americana 2026’ award in Zitácuaro, an honor intended to serve as an “act of historical justice” for their struggle for autonomy and territorial defense.
Following this, Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla met with representatives from 42 Pirinda indigenous communities in Huetamo. During the meeting, the Governor noted that Michoacán now has 52 recognized self-governments, describing the shift as a ‘peaceful revolution’ and a ‘fourth level of government’ designed to uphold the rights of original peoples. The engagement also functioned as a forum for communities to request state support for healthcare, education, agriculture, and public works.
