Indigenous collaboration agreements in Canada

Overview

Various Indigenous nations in Canada are establishing formal agreements with municipal, governmental, and educational institutions to advance reconciliation and shared governance.

In late September 2026, the City of Langford, Tsartlip First Nation, and Tseycum First Nation signed a Memorandum of Understanding to foster long-term collaboration. This agreement establishes a framework for annual government-to-government meetings and quarterly staff meetings to address economic development, tourism, arts and culture, environmental stewardship, and advocacy.

By October 2026, Williams Lake First Nation entered into a cooperative agreement with Thompson Rivers University titled ‘Yerí7 me7 sucwentwécw-kt, We will recognize one another’. This partnership focuses on joint decision-making, academic programming, and research to improve educational outcomes for T’exelcemc students while acknowledging the nation’s inherent rights and cultural authority.
