Indonesia 2026 Academic Ability Test implementation

Overview

The Indonesian Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) announced the schedule and protocols for the 2026 Academic Ability Test (TKA) for high school and vocational students. The assessment was designed to use an Item Response Theory (IRT) scoring scale of 200–800 to more accurately measure academic competence. To ensure safety, the ministry established flexibility and makeup sessions for students in disaster-affected areas, such as those facing forest and land fires.

The TKA was launched nationwide, with over 1.4 million vocational students participating in the first wave. During the second wave, which began in early November, approximately 1.33 million students participated in the Indonesian language subject assessment. Deputy Minister Atip Latipulhayat emphasized the need for rapid coordination between central and local governments to address technical issues and maintain integrity, particularly in island regions like the Riau Islands where connectivity challenges exist.

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti stated the exam is intended to reflect educational quality and provide feedback to schools to improve teaching methods, rather than to create student pressure. Following the launch, the ministry began investigating several individuals suspected of violating regulations. Inspector General Faisal Syahrul confirmed that in-depth examinations are underway regarding reports of misconduct, including the alleged use of artificial intelligence (AI) and live streaming on platforms such as YouTube. Legislator Ledia Hanifa Amaliah of Commission X has also called for a thorough evaluation of these alleged cheating incidents to ensure the TKA serves its purpose of reflecting teaching quality rather than becoming a target for manipulation.
