Indonesia-Bulgaria bilateral relations

Overview

Indonesia and Bulgaria are expanding bilateral cooperation across several strategic sectors, including education, sports, tourism, trade, and science. During a meeting in Jakarta, Indonesian House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani and Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Poulev discussed strengthening partnerships through student exchanges, joint research, and scholarship programs.

As the two nations approach the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, the relationship has seen increased momentum through high-level visits and ongoing political consultations. To symbolize this friendship, a bust of Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski was inaugurated at the Bulgarian Embassy in Jakarta on September 12, 2026.

Bulgarian Ambassador Tanya Dimitrova noted that the growing relationship is evidenced by frequent high-level visits and reciprocal meetings between deputy foreign ministers. Diplomatic momentum has been sustained through ongoing political consultations at the director-general level and efforts to increase trade volumes.

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 118th anniversary of Bulgaria’s Declaration of Independence, the Bulgarian Embassy in Jakarta hosted an official reception. The event, attended by Indonesian Minister Muktarudin and representatives from the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, included discussions on strengthening cooperation in tourism, cultural exchange, and education.
