Indonesia cooperative sector revitalization
Entities: Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih (KDKMP) · Ministry of Cooperatives (Kemenkop) · Ferry Juliantono · Generation Z
Overview
In mid‑July 2026, Indonesia marked National Cooperative Day with a push for digital transformation. Local leaders in Jembrana urged cooperative members to adopt online tools and improve staff skills, while President Prabowo Subianto framed cooperatives as a pillar of the economy and pledged continued policy support.
A week later, the sector reported a record business volume of over Rp7.47 trillion, covering nearly 18,000 cooperatives and generating surplus earnings of Rp377.4 billion. The growth was highlighted alongside the inauguration of a heritage project at the historic Tugu Koperasi in West Java, aimed at preserving the site of the first Cooperative Congress and promoting cooperative‑driven economic development.
On 27 July, Minister of Cooperatives Ferry Juliantono announced a surge in Generation Z‑led cooperative start‑ups, especially in the creative economy and young‑farmer segments. The ministry recorded registrations for new cooperatives serving content creators, animators and young agricultural producers, and pledged mentoring to help them scale sustainably. As of the end of July, Indonesia counted 83,382 village‑level cooperatives, with about 1,000 already operating in Central and East Java, underscoring the expanding role of cooperatives among younger entrepreneurs.
