Indonesia judicial oversight and appointments

In late July 2026 Indonesia’s Judicial Oversight Commission (Komisi Yudisial) reported that 121 judges had breached the Code of Ethics and Conduct for Judges, based on 1,402 public complaints received in the first half of the year. The commission recommended a range of disciplinary measures, from warnings to heavy sanctions, to be considered by the Supreme Court.

A few days later, the same commission moved to the next phase of its judicial reform agenda by holding the open‑ended final interview stage for 23 candidates seeking appointment to the Supreme Court and its ad‑hoc benches. The interviews, conducted from 3‑7 August, aimed to assess candidates’ experience, integrity and independence before the commission decides which of them will fill the eleven permanent seats and three ad‑hoc positions.

Together, these actions illustrate a concerted effort by Indonesia’s judicial oversight body to both address misconduct among existing judges and to ensure the selection of new judges who meet higher standards of competence and integrity.
