Indonesia salt production initiatives

In late July 2026, Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries began a large‑scale rehabilitation of salt‑production facilities and shrimp ponds in Aceh. The programme targets 90 salt‑production kitchens and 15,000 ha of shrimp ponds, installing new brine‑refinery systems, geomembranes and communal storage, with the aim of restoring coastal livelihoods and increasing aquaculture revenue through 2027.

A week later, in early August, the government accelerated the construction of the National Salt Industry Center (K‑SIGN) on Rote Ndao, East Nusa Tenggara. High‑level officials, including the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs and the Marine and Fisheries Minister, inspected the site. The project, led by state‑owned PT Nindya Karya with PT Garam Abraham Mose, is intended to boost domestic salt output, cut imports and achieve national salt self‑sufficiency, reflecting presidential directives to strengthen food security and regional economies.

Together, these actions illustrate a coordinated push across multiple provinces to expand Indonesia’s salt production capacity, support local communities and reduce reliance on imports.
