Indonesia sustainable development innovation awards

Indonesia has initiated several programs to promote technological and social innovation aimed at supporting sustainable development. The Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) introduced the 2026 Environmental and Social Innovation Awards (ENSIA) to drive improvements in environmental quality, industrial decarbonization, and green financing.

In conjunction with these efforts, Hasanuddin University hosted the InTechSEA Awards 2026 in Jakarta, involving over 80 companies from the energy, mining, and financial sectors. Following these initiatives, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persero), or INALUM, received eight awards at the ENSIA 2026 in Bali. The company earned four Platinum-level awards for categories including emission reduction, water efficiency, and waste management, as well as several Silver awards for energy efficiency, biodiversity, and social innovation.

During the ENSIA 2026 event, industry experts also discussed Indonesia’s carbon market potential. Bonn Choi, a Senior Researcher at the Korea Research Institute on Climate Change, noted that implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement enables businesses to use carbon market mechanisms for both emission reduction and economic value creation. Experts emphasized that realizing Indonesia’s potential in sectors such as energy, forestry, and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS/CCUS) requires a clear market ecosystem, regulatory certainty, and the integration of reduction sources into an Emissions Trading System (ETS).

Furthering waste management efforts, manufacturer ALVAboard has introduced the ‘Eco Bin’ to support waste sorting infrastructure at the source. This initiative targets households, offices, industrial areas, and public spaces to improve recycling quality and support a circular economy. Christabelle Priscilla, Chief Marketing Officer of ALVAboard, stated that while public awareness is a foundation, ‘high-quality supporting facilities are essential’ for the successful implementation of waste sorting systems.
