Indonesia technological and industrial development
Overview
Indonesia is pursuing various international technological partnerships and domestic industrial initiatives to enhance its national capabilities.
In mid-2026, Indonesia established cooperation with Chinese entities in the healthcare and telecommunications sectors. This included a memorandum of understanding between Institut Teknologi Bandung and Shanghai Microport MedBot to research medical robotics, AI-driven telesurgery, and satellite communications. Additionally, Telkomsel and China Telecom Global agreed to develop integrated digital solutions utilizing 5G, IoT, and edge-computing to improve connectivity across the Indonesian archipelago.
By late August 2026, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry expanded its focus toward industrial structure and technological diversification. The Ministry initiated programs to integrate small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into metal sector supply chains for slaughterhouse equipment. Concurrently, Indonesia sought to deepen technological cooperation with Russia, moving toward investment and technology transfer in fields such as drones, underwater robotics, industrial automation, and waste management.
During the 10th BRICS Industry Ministers' Meeting in Jaipur, Indonesian Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza and Indian Minister of State for Industry and Commerce Jitin Prasada discussed strategic industrial cooperation. Following Indonesia’s full membership in BRICS, the two nations explored collaboration in semiconductors, green industries, electric vehicles, and digital transformation. The discussions aimed to leverage their respective manufacturing bases to support Indo-Pacific supply chains and address a decline in Indonesia’s non-oil and gas manufactured exports to India.
