Overview

In late August 2026, Indonesia and the United States engaged in a series of military training operations aimed at enhancing regional security and interoperability.

The Ksatria Warrior 2026 exercise, a bilateral program between the Indonesian and U.S. armies, concluded on August 28 in South Sumatra. This 15-day training focused on tactical instruction, staff exercises, and civil construction projects to strengthen bilateral ties.

Immediately following this, the Super Garuda Shield 2026 multinational exercise commenced on August 31. Hosted by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and co-led by the United States Indo-Pacific Command, the operation involves approximately 4,700 to 5,000 personnel from 21 participating nations.

By early September, the exercise expanded into specialized phases across various Indonesian locations. In Bandung, the Staff Exercise (STAFFEX) phase began, testing the ability of the TNI and partner militaries to develop unified responses to joint operation scenarios through command, control, and communication coordination.

Simultaneously, marine forces from Indonesia, the United States, Japan, and South Korea have been conducting field training in the forests of Lampung. This component includes combat patrols, ambushes, and security patrols designed to test physical endurance and technical skills in complex terrain. Other ongoing activities include airborne assault training in South Sumatra involving personnel from Indonesia, the United States, India, Japan, and France, as well as specialized modules in cyber warfare, maritime maneuvers, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) across locations such as Jakarta and North Kalimantan.
