Indonesian corporate and banking share buybacks

Overview

Major Indonesian conglomerates and state-owned banks have initiated significant share buyback programs in response to market fluctuations.

PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BRI) has entered a second phase of its buyback plan, allocating up to Rp 1 trillion for the period between October 22, 2026, and January 21, 2027. This follows an initial phase in 2026 where the bank allocated up to Rp 500 billion. The program is part of a broader shareholder value creation strategy authorized during the March 2025 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, which set a total maximum buyback limit of Rp 3 trillion.

Corporate Secretary Dhanny stated that the phased approach reflects BRI’s confidence in its business fundamentals and long-term growth prospects, while accounting for global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions. The buyback, funded through internal cash via the Indonesia Stock Exchange, is expected to increase net earnings per share from Rp 206.94 to Rp 207.50. The repurchased shares are intended for a share ownership program involving employees, directors, and the board of commissioners, pending shareholder approval. The total shares repurchased will not exceed 10 percent of the placed capital. BRI reported a net profit of Rp 31.2 trillion as of the end of the second quarter of 2026, with total assets growing 11.7 percent year-on-year to Rp 2,352 trillion.

In the private sector, the Barito Group is preparing Rp 3.5 trillion for buybacks across four entities: PT Barito Pacific Tbk (BRPT), PT Barito Renewables Energy Tbk (BREN), PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk (TPIA), and PT Petrindo Jaya Kreasi Tbk (CUAN). These transactions are slated for completion by the end of December 2026. Additionally, PT Bank Mandiri Tbk (BMRI) reported completing a buyback of 91.75 million shares earlier in the year.
