Indonesian media and legal regulatory developments

Indonesia is undergoing legislative and digital reviews concerning media, copyright, and administrative processes. In July 2026, the House of Representatives’ Commission VII met with public broadcasters and the National Standardization Agency to evaluate the 2025 state budget implementation. Concurrently, discussions in Surabaya focused on a draft broadcasting law, with stakeholders advocating for regulations that address digital media and ensure parity between traditional broadcasters and internet platforms.

By August 2026, the Ministry of Law progressed with revisions to Copyright Law Number 28 of 2014. The proposed changes aim to establish royalty rights for journalistic works, benefiting both press companies and individual journalists. The Minister is preparing to request a Presidential Letter to initiate formal discussions with the House of Representatives. Additionally, the Ministry has begun testing electronic voting systems and digital talent management tools as part of a broader digital transformation initiative.
