Indonesian media ecosystem development

Efforts to strengthen the Indonesian media ecosystem have progressed from calls for specific financial regulations to broader institutional partnerships.

In August 2026, media advocacy groups urged the Indonesian Press Council to ratify regulations for the Indonesian Journalism Fund. This fund aims to support small and regional media outlets by providing access to revenue through an open, proposal-based selection process. To protect editorial independence, the proposed regulations include a “wall of separation” to ensure an anonymous relationship between donors and recipients, preventing influence over journalistic products.

By September 2026, the focus expanded to a formal partnership between the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) and the Press Council. This collaboration, established through a Memorandum of Understanding, aligns with the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan. The initiative prioritizes increasing the capacity of press institutions, enhancing journalist competence and ethics, and stabilizing mainstream media against the challenges of digital platforms and social media.
