Indonesian MPR constitutional review and documentation
Overview
The People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) of Indonesia has initiated several efforts related to constitutional documentation and review. In mid-September 2026, the assembly launched ‘e-Aspirasi Konstitusi’, a digital channel intended to gather substantive public input for an ongoing constitutional review process. Deputy Chair Lestari Moerdijat noted that this initiative seeks to address challenges regarding public trust and ensure the constitution remains relevant through academic and public participation.
By late September 2026, the MPR expanded its focus to historical documentation by launching two books at Gedung Merdeka in Bandung. These publications, titled ‘Merawat Memori Konstitusi: Sejarah dan Risalah MPR dalam Meneguhkan Demokrasi Indonesia’, document the institutional history of the MPR and the amendment processes of the 1945 Constitution conducted between 1999 and 2002. Chairman Ahmad Muzani and Dedi Iskandar Batubara emphasized that recording these legal and political dynamics is essential for preserving the nation’s democratic legacy.
