Indonesian political backlash over Budi Arie Setiadi remarks

Controversy has emerged in Indonesia following remarks by Budi Arie Setiadi, chairman of the volunteer organization Projo, regarding the possibility of political shifts occurring “sooner than 2029.”

Activist Yulian Paonganan, known as Ongen, criticized the remarks and the Projo organization, labeling the group “pseudo-volunteers” (relawan semu) who lack clear political direction. Ongen urged Setiadi to provide a factual and constitutional basis for his claims, warning that such narratives could imply the administration of President Prabowo Subianto may not complete its full term.

The comments triggered widespread political backlash. The PC SATRIA branch in Kendal expressed concern that the statements could incite political instability and unnecessary speculation. Representatives from the Gerindra Party wing reaffirmed support for President Prabowo Subianto to complete his five-year mandate. Additionally, the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) distanced itself from the remarks, with Vice Chairman Andy Budiman clarifying that Setiadi holds no official role or membership within the party.
